In the yearly sneaker calendar, there’s really nothing like the reveal of the next Jordan signature model. Rolling out the red carpet in New York City, Jordan Brand has officially unleashed the Air Jordan 40, consequential on its own merits but sporting cutting edge tech details and sprawling design inspirations. While “The Classic” white and black serves as your first chance to grab the silhouette, Beaverton has already promised its next two steps, including the “Blue Suede” colorway at hand.
While our chief focus with the Jordan 40th anniversary has been on the unfettered run of significant retros, the same historic air looms over the AJ40, pulling from the archives for its layout. Though models like the Jordan 31 made conscious efforts to update already established styles, recent tentpole models have instead taken more indirect, abstract cues from the catalog (see the Air Jordan 9 aspects that infused the Air Jordan 39.) While you won’t be able to spot direct lifts from Mike’s on-court signatures, there are a number of opaque ties: the speckled heel counter ties back to the Air Jordan 3, the tongue calls to the Air Jordan 5, and the reflective finishes harken to the Air Jordan 13.
The “Blue Suede” Air Jordan 40 is tangible proof of an overarching that JB designers teased audiences with, stating that the nine colorways queued up for the Air Jordan 40 would toy with distinct material application. That choice here obviously reinforces the sleek, modern composition overall, while capturing the tonal aesthetics on display with each of the three revealed looks.
Finally, we can’t escape any coverage of the model without denoting what tech you’ll arrive once you’ve unboxed it. A full-length Zoom Strobel and full-length ZoomX package make up the cushioning, bringing Nike, Inc.’s revolutionary work in running onto the court. 360-degree containment comes with the interior webbing, while a collision of 40 degree angle cut-outs in the herringbone traction underfoot provides grippy traction for any surface.
Again, the Air Jordan 40 “Blue Suede” releases on August 20th, retailing for $205. Keep watch over any additional developments with this shoe via our Jordan Release Dates 2025 page, and for more info on the model, check our exclusive breakdown.
