Subdued colorways have been sneaking into the Made in USA series quietly all year. Rather than charting noticeable trends, New Balance has been slowly integrating muted tones that feel lived-in. The fabrications feel worn rather than showroom fresh, and there’s more of a workwear vibe to the brushed suede tones than there is luxe sparkle.
That approach comes together on the New Balance 990v4 “Olive,” starting with a midsole finished in a true olive green rather than the usual neutral base. Plush suede wraps the toe, mudguard, eyestays, and heel with a soft handfeel that looks better the longer it’s worn. Underneath, open white mesh sits beside lightly textured off-white leather, adding dimension without overcomplicating the upper. Small 3M hits land on the “N,” the backtab, and the tip of the toe box.
ABZORB cushioning forms the midsole’s distinct layers before transitioning into a dark brown rubber outsole designed for durability. White flat laces keep the upper feeling bright against the deeper suede shades, while a grey heel tab helps anchor the palette.
