It simultaneously feels like an age ago and just yesterday when the “Protection Pack” was the hottest thing going. Mourn not for the distressed aesthetic, though; even if original pairs, once comfortably clearing double their retail price, are relatively accessible now, they were a genuine springboard in launching their parent company to the seat at the table they now occupy.

Whether aimed at revitalizing that chase-worthy energy or simply sticking to a formula that’s already proven to work, New Balance has dipped back into “Protection Pack” once more. That first influenced a retro of said “OGs,” but also crops up with a range of new color options. The trio at hand dips into the split blocking that once defined the initiative, now spread into a blend of low-saturation tones. Across three pairs, a stable, steely base gives way to light green, deep brown, and rich navy suede, while of course offering up another serving of the frayed edges any NB follower should recognize.
