Chet Holmgren’s Prince-Inspired Nike KD 18 “Thunder & Reign” Drops March 13th

Chet Holmgren is to the Nike KD 18 what Jalen Williams is to the adidas Harden Vol. 10. The two rising Oklahoma City Thunder stars have emerged as standard bearers for their go-to signature lines, arguably second only to Kevin Durant and James Harden themselves when it comes to repping those models on court. Both have also received the white-glove treatment from their sneaker sponsors through a number of standout PEs.

Today’s headline brings us Chet Holmgren’s Nike KD 18 “Thunder & Reign,” first worn during the OKC Thunder’s ring ceremony and now set for a public release on March 13th. For the Minneapolis-born hooper, the design reference is a fitting one. Although technically unconfirmed, the sneaker appears to draw inspo from the stage identity and eclectic wardrobe of Prince, also from the Twin Cities. Cheetah print underlays take after Price’s signature guitar strap, while the rest of the sneaker arrives nods to “Purple Rain” in varying shades of purple.

Beyond its obvious Prince tie-in, the “Thunder & Reign” name makes a clear allusion to a dynasty in the making, hence calling it “Reign” instead of “Rain.” This is one of two Chet Holmgren PEs dropping on March 13th, joined by the KD 18 “Tree Camo.” Both do a fine job championing Chet’s tunnel style sensibilities, albeit in very different ways.
