International Women’s Day is about celebrating those who define their own path—and do it unapologetically. Chef Bruja is exactly that type of creative. Whether she’s throwing down in the kitchen or putting together an outfit, everything she does carries the same philosophy: be real, be fearless, and don’t stay in one lane.
Raised in the South Bronx, Jaime—better known to the world as Chef Bruja—first discovered her love for cooking at six years old, standing on a step stool and making meals for herself and her sister while living with her grandparents. What began as necessity eventually grew into something much bigger because over time, cooking became a creative outlet, one that allowed her to express herself while navigating a childhood shaped by homelessness, a broken home, and an addicted father.
Her career didn’t follow a traditional blueprint. While working as a fashion designer, Bruja began posting her cooking online before organizing her first food pop-up in a Harlem park; she chose the location simply because it was free and she wasn’t sure anyone would show up. Instead, a line formed and the food ran out before everyone could be served. That moment sparked a wave of opportunities, from corporate catering to the creative projects she continues to pursue today.
Fashion has always played just as big a role in her identity. “I like to say your outfit is your true first impression of someone,” she says. Growing up in the Bronx during one of fashion’s most influential eras shaped her bold approach to personal style heavily inspired by hip-hop icons and grounded in the confidence to wear whatever feels right.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, we caught up with Chef Bruja to talk about creativity, personal style, and the influences that continue to shape her journey, all while highlighting three hand-picked adidas silhouettes styled entirely through her lens.
All of her selections are available now on adidas.com.
“Accessorizing is key to a simple fit you want to elevate. Even leg warmers with a school girl skirt moment would be sooo tea with these.”
Chef Bruja on the Adistar XLG 2.0
The adidas Adistar XLG 2.0 continues to make waves after its launch in February. A stand-out for the chunky, exploded look and a mainstay in the rotation due to its comfort, the Adistar XLG 2.0 has quickly risen to become one of 2026’s most desired lifestyle shoes. While the Solar Orange colorway may be the model’s most recognizable, the adidas Originals team made complete a library of strong colorways for both men and women.
Below, we have the “Wonder Taupe” colorway crafted just for the ladies. Here’s Chef Bruja’s take: “It’s a chunkier shoe with such a good color wave, so a dark denim really made these pop. Accessorizing is key to a simple fit you want to elevate. Even leg warmers with a school girl skirt moment would be sooo tea with these.”
“…layering with texture, colors, and patterns I knew would take these to the next level.”
Chef Bruja on the Adistar Control 5
Joined together with the Adistar XLG 2.0 is the Adistar Control 5, a re-issue of the 2008 running model that has re-surfaced at the right time. Tech runners are in demand, but the ones with authentic origins seem to resonate and adidas made sure to give it the proper update for the modern day. The comfort is undeniably there as it has its roots in distance running, but styling comes down to letting loose a bit.
For a silhouette that is undeniably an everyday shoe, Bruja chose to keep things neutral with the “Wonder Sage” edition. For this model, here’s Bruja’s advice: “You can have fun with this shoe. I wanted to pair these with a good barrel jean, layering with texture, colors, and patterns I knew would take these to the next level.”
“With these, you can go for an edgy look, or streetwear, preppy, etc. That’s why I love Sambas!”
Chef Bruja on the Adidas Samba
The slim-fit icon dominating the torpedo sneaker trend needs no introduction. “This is the girl!!” Chef Bruja exclaims. With so many options available, the Samba has proven that its versatility matches its beauty. For 2026, adidas chose to expand on the Samba universe by offering more animal prints with bold colors and even re-shaped T-toe constructions.
“I wanted the shoes to pop, matching the red laces with my hair. A good pair of baggy jeans and a hoodie is my go-to when I wanna look good, but not do too much. With these, you can go for an edgy look, or streetwear, preppy, etc. That’s why I love Sambas!”
