It’s become an annual tradition for Nike to take a moment to honor one of the most important figures not just in sports, but in American history: Jackie Robinson. Typically at the start of a new MLB season, Nike will unveil a special edition sneaker release inspired by Jackie’s legacy not just in breaking baseball’s color barrier in 1947, but for his influence throughout the Civil Rights movements.
That tradition continues in 2026 with another special-edition release timed to Jackie Robinson Day on April 15. Over the years, Nike has paid tribute through a range of silhouettes, including the Dunk Low, Air Force 1, and Air Max 1, each carrying visual storytelling that reflects Robinson’s enduring legacy. This year, the Swoosh welcomes the V5 RNR.
The Nike V5 RNR “Jackie Robinson” steps away from the more graphic-heavy executions of past releases, opting instead for a simple black-and-cream color scheme. Up top is a black overlay above a black sport mesh layer, while the Sail white acts as a contrast on the laces, Swoosh background, and the midsole. At first glance these may appear like a standard general release, but there are defining details such as the “42” placed on the tongue and a new logo on the heel that features Jackie’s insignia above a baseball diamond.
Rather than rely on bold storytelling elements, the design allows the significance of Robinson’s legacy to speak for itself, intentionally yet quietly reminding us of the courage and change he represented.
As it stands, a firm release date has not yet been shared, but we suspect a release on or around Jackie Robinson Day on April 15th.
