Movement in footwear design continues to shift toward experimentation, and that direction shows clearly in J.L-A.L’s latest work with PUMA. Built on a newly introduced silhouette, the J.L-A.L x PUMA CELL Geo 1 Pack rethinks how a sneaker can change over time, rather than staying visually fixed from day one.
At the center of the project is the CELL Geo, a model grounded in PUMA’s 1990s cushioning system but reshaped with a more sculptural approach. The upper uses glossy patent leather designed to wear down gradually, revealing a hidden gradient beneath. That layered construction introduces a sense of evolution, where each pair develops a slightly different look with continued use.
The first employs a burnt sienna base color with hints of amber on the undersides. This topcoat will eventually wear away over time to reveal warmer tones and give the shoe a more lived-in, patina-like finish. Contrasted black details on the tongue and laces help finish off the bold silhouette, anchored by molded CELL heel.
The second is far more subtle with its approach, employing a midnight black shell to conceal navy tones when hit by certain angles. Overall, the look is cleaner and a bit more toned down, allowing the treatment on the color palette to draw focus toward the organic panel cuts and oversized heel.
The design philosophy is just one example of brands beginning to lean into material treatments that evolve with wear rather than fight it.
