The Nike Air Max 90 has always accepted color-blocking treatments better than any other Air Max model in the lineage. That’s why the model-to-model transports have always gone down on the 1990 model and you don’t even need to look that far into the past to see it in practice (the Air Max 90 “Neon” being an example).
Later this Summer, the Swoosh is employing that strategy once more, but they’re taking it a bit further than the predictable application of colors. At quick glance, it seems like Nike simple took the colorway of the Air Max 180 “Ultramarine”, transplanting the white, ultramarine blue light grey, and hot red onto its predecessor. However, take a closer look and you’ll see that the 180’s trademark suede has been carried over as well, ready to eat up dust and dirt with ease (that’s the 180’s one long criticism).
Furthermore, the 180’s distinct mesh material hops onto the Air Max 90 as well, repeating on the quadrilateral cut-out and displacing the standard Air Max plate. Even the signature ridged heel medallion has been swapped for the soft suede with embroidered Nike Air.
Could this possibly be the beginning of a series where the Air Max 90 embodies the DNA of itself and another silhouette? Time will tell, but for now, expect a release on Nike.com this Summer ’26 season for $150.
