A wave of tech-runner nostalgia keeps moving through the market, and New Balance is leaning into it with one of its louder spring drops yet. Official images of the New Balance 1890 “Boysenberry” have surfaced ahead of its April 16 release, bringing a bold mix of retro performance design and striking color.
Featuring a Boysenberry/Punch Yellow color scheme, the pair dresses deep purple throughout the mesh upper, overlays, laces and tongue, highlighted by synthetic flowing overlays. Yellow wavy piping follows the curved cage panels while outlining the large side logo. The additions give this version a speedy appearance with high contrast elements. Bright red-orange accents surrounding the branding further detail the upper without distracting from the purple canvas.
Moving around to the heel of the foot, things turn more sinister. A black glossy heel shell envelops the entire rear while diagonal red striped accents are layered throughout to help break up the darker color palette. Below, the mottled midsole continues the aggressive theme with pops of purple foam contrasted by neon yellow paint splashes and exposed ABZORB modules showcasing a translucent hue of red-orange.
There is also a clear design direction here. Instead of cleaning up the era it comes from, New Balance lets the silhouette stay loud, layered, and unapologetically technical. That choice gives this release more personality than a lot of modern retro runners trying to play it safe.
