We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: few retailers, if any, are as adept at scouring the adidas archive and coming up with gold as Size?, a skill born from the UK’s deep appreciation for Three Stripes history within its broader streetwear culture. More often than not that materializes as exclusive terrace classics in the Samba or Gazelle vein. Not this time, though. The latest round of Size? exclusives revives the cult classic adidas ZX8000 in two prototype colorways steeped in lore, with draws set to open August 1st.
The adidas ZX8000 debuted in 1989 and holds an important place in adidas history for two reasons, one performance-related, one cultural. The shoe helped bring adidas’ Torsion system to the masses, a TPU midfoot plate designed to support independent movement between the front and rear of the foot. On the cultural side, the model was a common sight in German underground clubs following the fall of the Berlin Wall the year it released, something of a symbol of the Western world in its bright, flashy original colorways.
One of those original colorways serves as a reference in this Size? exclusive batch. The adidas ZX8000 “Aqua,” which has seen a number of retros over the years, returns here in a prototype colorway featuring some key color swaps. The purple and yellow accents of the original are essentially inverted, while the familiar aqua-colored mesh foundation stays uninterrupted.
The other half of the delivery brings a spin on the adidas ZX8000 “Germany” from 1998. Size? again opts for an inverted color blocking strategy, swapping the black and yellow treatments of the original for a darker take that reads more Germany, less McDonald’s. Pure gas.
The adidas ZX8000 “Proto Aqua” and “Proto Germany” release August 6th exclusively via Size? for £110 each (about $150). Draws open August 1st at 3:00 PM ET via the size?launches app.
