Nike SB keeps its recent momentum going with this new, culturally-inspired release. While previous SB Dunks were more overt with their storytelling, the Nike SB Dunk Low “Som Tum” treads a more subtle path. The focus here is on materials and symbology, and with Thai food culture at the helm, the rest falls into place.
The upper is a play on the hand-woven baskets that are prevalent throughout Thailand. Textiles are used on the toe and midfoot, and wove textured suede overlays mimic the natural materials. A soft beige palette keeps things calm, with pops of crimson-orange stitching and laces.
Branding choices stay thoughtful throughout. A metallic heel panel introduces visual balance, finished with Nike branding written in Thai script. The color placement feels deliberate, keeping the shoe grounded while still delivering visual movement from heel to toe.
Marks on the underside of the tongue add to the story. One patch has an image of rice steaming in bamboo. The other shows papaya, herbs and spices in a mortar and pestle. They are a nod to Som Tum, Thailand’s ubiquitous papaya salad, a dish firmly rooted in the realm of the quotidian.
Underfoot details continue the story quietly. A lotus flower appears beneath the insole and Zoom Air unit, paired with graphics inspired by jasmine rice packaging. It’s a reminder that Nike SB often hides its strongest storytelling where only wearers will notice.
While no official connection is confirmed, the release naturally invites conversation around Eric Koston’s Thai heritage. Regardless of any link, the execution stands on its own as a respectful cultural tribute.
