Buccaneers stand up. After wide fan demand and several teases throughout the years, the Air Jordan 5 “Laney” is now confirmed to return in 2027, issuing a new version of the varsity-themed sneaker for the first time since 2013.
Hardcore Jumpman enthusiasts won’t need the reminder, but the Air Jordan 5 “Laney” stands as one of the more famous versions of the silhouette, despite not being among the launch set like the “Black Metallic,” “Grape,” or “Fire Red” were. Taking its proud blue and yellow from Michael Jordan’s days at Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina, the long layoff between releases has made its eventual next Retro a frequent topic. Outside of its original 2000 introduction, the shoe has only touched down once as a retro, brought back to shelves in 2013.
Bucking the company’s recent emphasis on “Nike Air” branding throughout the catalog, at this juncture, it appears the 2027 Air Jordan 5 “Laney” will remain true to original specs, including the Jumpman stamps on the heels. Interestingly, this news comes about shortly after a sample version that did include that “OG” touch.
Paging back in the archives, the Air Jordan 14 from 1999 was the first to brandish blue and yellow in line with the Wilmington school. However, that shoe wasn’t titled the “Laney” until further re-releases. It’s really the Jordan 5 in question that established this colorway as an accepted part of the canon, going on to inspire similar takes on the Jordan 1 as well as twisted variations like the “Shanghai Shen” and 2019’s blue-first inversion.
At the time of this writing, the Air Jordan 5 “Laney” has a tentative May 15th, 2027 date attached. @zsneakerheadz reports that full family sizing will be in tow. Keep our Jordan Release Dates page close by for any additional updates as they come down.
