The Nike “Swooshman” Is Getting His Own GT Future Through .SWOOSH

Nike Basketball is tapping into the golden age of sports marketing with an upcoming GT Future inspired by the brand’s long-forgotten “Swooshman” superhero mascot, first teased via the @dotswoosh Instagram account.

Created to champion Nike’s futuristic ambitions at the turn of the millennium, Swooshman made his first public appearance at the brand’s “Hoop Heroes” event at Yokohama Centre in Tokyo back in 1996. The character was a product of Nike Sports Entertainment, an experimental venture centered around large-scale activations designed to spotlight both the brand and its athletes. The suit itself was created by Jose Fernandez, best known for his work on the Batman Forever costumes, and reportedly cost a staggering $125,000 to produce.

Now Swooshman is back, and the pairing feels especially fitting given the GT Future’s ties to the Foamposite era. The .SWOOSH teaser shows a first-person view of the character navigating a dimly lit room before opening what we know to be a GT Future box. The sneaker is expected to feature a “Metallic Silver/University Red/Black” color scheme, a natural match for the chrome-heavy aesthetic that made Swooshman such a striking symbol of Nike’s forward-looking vision.
