A$AP Rocky and PUMA have always kept motorsports at the center of their partnership; after all, Flacko’s formal title is “Creative Director of PUMA x F1.” That’s led to a real emphasis on genuine racewear, a natural fit given the use of crash dummy aesthetics for his TESTING album and beyond. For years, that meant exploring everything that Mostro and Inhale silhouettes had to offer, but as the partnership enters year four, the Big Cat’s core product is working itself into the fabric, as the ASAP Rocky x PUMA Straycat showcases.
Coming off the heels of the PUMA Suede ’94, the Straycat is another juncture where the brand’s true staple shoes are transformed through the rapper’s distinctive point of view. While that shoe leaned understated in its changes to the base model, the same can’t possibly be said for this one. New Vibram outsoles that creep onto the uppers (a la the Mostro), but that’s far from all the new hardware: a slice of hardened mesh wraps the collars, distressed SideStripes ensure the Mad Max aesthetics seen in past collections, and, styled as they are in the product photos below, an inventive double-lace system adds an extra layer of depth. Custom packaging and a dust bag with throwback automobile graphics close out this package.
The A$AP Rocky PUMA Straycat is scheduled for August 27th via retailers overseas; whether a wide launch via PUMA/stateside will hold onto that date is unclear. For now, check out detailed on-white shots included below.
