The Shox R4 is a prized possession across Latin America. Since its debut in the early 2000s, the springy runner has been a hot item for street style, and the current success of the Shox revival is largely due to its massive fanbase south of our border. That said, Nike is diving into deeper cultural storytelling waters with its latest Puerto Rico-inspired release, leaning on symbolism rather than surface-level cues to bring the concept to life.

At the center of the design is a striking accessory: a removable charm inspired by the vejigante, one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic folkloric figures. Recognizable by its horned mask and vibrant presence during festival celebrations, the vejigante represents the island’s layered cultural fusion of African, Spanish, and Taíno influences.

The color palette follows a similarly thoughtful approach. Hits of red and white align with the Puerto Rican flag, while the soft light blue upper may nod to the original shade of blue used in earlier versions of the flag, a detail that resonates more deeply with those familiar with the island’s history. A similar shade of blue was seen on the flag utilized by Bad Bunny during his iconic Super Bowl Halftime show. That’s just our speculation as the light blue could simply be a nod to the coastal nature of the land.

Additionally, Nike adds some graphics to the actual Shox colums; PR and starry hits appear in a manner typically seen on street signage from vendors. Insanely awesome detail.

Altogether, the release reflects a broader shift in how Nike approaches regional storytelling. Instead of leaning on obvious visual cues such as flag hits, the brand builds meaning through layered details that blends historical folklore and identity into a product that feels both culturally rooted and globally relevant. A release is expected this Summer for $155, with a drop possibly happening on or around the Puerto Rican Day parade in June.
