The first major milestone of the MLB season is right around the corner. This April 15th marks the 22nd annual Jackie Robinson Day, when every player on every team will don #42 in honor of the civil rights icon and Baseball Hall of Famer. And per usual, Nike has crafted special on and off-the-field styles for the occasion.
Joining the Nike V5 RNR “Jackie Robinson” in this year’s lineup is a matching take on the Nike Diamond Standout MCS cleat, detailed with Jackie’s #42 jersey number and a graphic of him swiping a bag. Baseball fans can’t help but be reminded of Jackie’s legendary steal of home in Game 1 of the 1955 World Series, one of the riskiest and most controversial plays in baseball history (Yogi Berra is in heaven arguing with the umpire right now).
The Nike Diamond Standout MCS is a new baseball cleat featuring a split plate for quick first steps – making it a fitting canvas for the Jackie Robinson theme. Standard styles feature lightweight mesh, but this special edition instead opts for an all-black leather upper with white contrast stitching, zig-zag paneling, and serrated detailing around the eyelets. Diamond dogs might recall vintage Nike baseball cleats from the ‘90s and early 2000s, an underrated corner of the brand’s archive from a design standpoint (just one man’s opinion).
The Jackie Robinson Nike Diamond Standout MCS cleat drops April 15th, Jackie Robinson Day, for $150. See official images below if you’re already planning to cop.
