On the heels of a less-than-stellar quarterly earnings report that’s dominated Wall Street chatter this month, Nike is making a leadership change. Andy Caine, a company veteran of over 20 years, is stepping into the role of Chief Innovation Officer, replacing Tony Bignell, who is departing after less than a year in the role to pursue his own creative ventures.
Caine was most recently VP, Creative Director for Nike Sportswear, where he played a key role in advancing the brand’s modern Air innovations through models like the Air VaporMax, Air Liquid Max, and Air Max 1000. Before that, he served as Creative Director of Global Football, helping launch influential Mercurial models and working closely with elite athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo to develop athlete-informed, performance-driven products. It’s that part of Caine’s background that makes him a compelling appointment, as Nike CEO Elliott Hill has repeatedly emphasized keeping the athlete perspective at the center of the brand’s creative direction and leadership.
In Nike’s own words:
Caine possesses a unique blend of dedication to athletes, creative vision, and strong product conviction. He recognizes that true innovation requires not only inventive thinking, but also building cohesive teams, fostering trust, and encouraging belief in new ideas. His curiosity, commitment to excellence, and talent development skills are well-known. Caine’s appointment signals both continuity and forward-thinking, reinforcing Nike’s philosophy of prioritizing athletes, while aiming for bold advances in innovation.
In his new position, Caine will guide Nike’s innovation initiatives across brands, sports, products, and platforms. Partnering with the broader Innovation, Design and Product leadership group, he will work to advance Nike’s mission of creating outstanding experiences that help athletes perform at their best, push the boundaries of performance, and ensure the athlete perspective remains central to Nike’s creative process and leadership.
