In so many ways, the story of NIGO x Nike is the story of how streetwear developed in Japan. The former BAPE head has turned to countless cultural touchstones from his adolescence in developing his Air Force 3 series, from the Planet of the Apes to varsity jackets to Levi’s denim, the latter with the help of the brand themselves.
Just as NIGO has looked back on the pieces that shaped him, a new generation earnestly looks to his work as a tentpole in their own tastes. A particular sentimental section of that journey is the NOWHERE retail space, founded alongside Jun Takahashi of UNDERCOVER as one of the first dedicated spaces for the burgeoning sub-culture. Though short-lived, the tangible node between two streetwear legends has lived on in the popular consciousness.
Some three decades after the brick-and-mortar shop closed its doors, Nike revisits NOWHERE with a patent leather Nike Air Force 1 Low, first teased by the man himself and quickly given a co-sign by Takahashi in kind. Contrast white stitching paces what’s otherwise a simplistic arrangement, paring royal purple overlays with a pristine white foundation, coated in the glossy materiality so associated with the Kenzo head the whole way through.
Official release info on the NOWHERE x Nike Air Force 1 Low is limited at this time, though backend info for this pair exists via overseas Nike channels. Given that, it’s possible we’ll begin hearing about a launch sooner than later.
