The ASICS GEL-1130 Mule definitely shares that front-page potential, arriving as a reworked version of one of the Japanese brand’s most ubiquitous models, a status earned through its on-trend retro build and approachable $110 price point.
For the most part, the model stays true to the GEL-1130 proper. The same midsole remains intact, while the upper bears the same mesh and leather layering that’s made the shoe a reliable staple in the first place. The only difference, albeit a major one, is the backless heel, transforming the 2008-born runner into a quirky slip-on. Controversial? Absolutely. But as sneaker history tells us time and again, that’s hardly the worst descriptor a model can have.
