The New Balance 983 Checks Off A High-Energy Red Colorway

Surprise, surprise. New Balance is stepping into autumn with yet another new lifestyle model under its belt in the New Balance 983, the latest addition to an already extensive lineup of fresh tech runners from these last few years alone.

The 983 is described by New Balance as a “reimagination of 2000s performance running,” a descriptor that could apply to several of the brand’s recent lifestyle models. The simplest way to frame it is as a sleeker take on the 9060, still rather hefty underfoot, but with an overall lower height and a trimmer upper. As for the tech, the 983 takes after other new silos, namely the New Balance 2000, by putting ABZORB SBS front and center for all to see, once again centering the retro cushioning system as something of a hero feature. The upper compares to any number of tech runners, sporting a mesh foundation with multiple abstract leather panels layered on top.

Following the New Balance 983 “Shadow Blue” launch colorway on October 1st is this energetic red makeup, currently popping up on US retailer calendars for October 9th. Glossy leather paneling, a norm for the model at this early stage, wraps the upper in red, followed by a soft pale pink around the heel. The “N” logos, lining, and remaining heel paneling are done in grey, while blue ABZORB SBS pods accent the midsole.

The New Balance 983 “Red Patent” releases October 9th, 2026 via New Balance and select retailers. The shoe comes in at $160, placing it in the mid tier of New Balance lifestyle models. Check out official retailer images below if you’re considering copping.
