We can’t conclusively state whether Aaron Judge and the Bronx bombers are reading our homepage, but we do think the timing is a bit coincidental; we post the MLB City Connect jerseys, and shortly afterwards, they’re pounding the table to adopt road alternates? Of course, we kid, but MLB’s alt jersey program is already off to a hot start this year, with plenty of “ooh’s” and “aah’s” from the included clubs for the earnest kits, and for paired Nike Air Max 1 releases coming alongside.
Eventually, we’re expecting all eight teams included in this year’s “City Connect” cadre to receive a version of Tinker Hatfield’s design, but news on that end has come on a scattered basis to date. As we parse through the full octet, the Nike Air Max 1 “Pittsburgh Pirates” is the latest to come to light.

The shoe and the jersey it’s based on obviously share a ton of similarities, most notably with the brooding black base across either. However, the Air Max 1 “Pittsburgh Pirates” places less of a focus on trademark gold, moving the menacing red trim up in the hierarchy, here encircling the Swoosh and defining the midline as the primary lace option. In what’s likely the most expressive touch, the Swoosh shifts to a striped chenille layout, perhaps calling to the bandana design on the updated Jolly Roger.
A raffle for the Nike Air Max 1 “Pittsburgh Pirates City Connect” is already listed at Social Status. Based on the already-revealed/released Braves and Padres, we’re expecting all the pairs in this series to be exclusive to boutiques in each team’s respective metro area, the fan store, and interestingly enough, Dick’s Sporting Goods. Get your entries in via Social Status as we parse out where to watch otherwise.
