A wide Sashiko Gals x New Balance release might never happen for the same reason the Japanese collective took off in the first place. The 15-woman Ōtsuchi-based group reimagines products through traditional Sashiko craftsmanship, a hand-done, highly intricate process that naturally limits output. That built-in scarcity has helped position them as one of the most sought-after collaborators in fashion today, including an ongoing partnership with New Balance that’s yielded masterful designs in ultra-limited batches.
The latest Sashiko Gals x New Balance project is a batch of New Balance 993s created for display at 1 Hotel Tokyo, meant to highlight the property’s focus on sustainability. Pairs are currently on showcased in the hotel’s signature 38th-floor lobby, where they’ll remain for about six months.
These won’t see a traditional release, but a limited run of just 10 pairs was made available via custom order earlier this month, exclusive to Japan. See detailed pics below.
