Serena Williams Returning to Tennis

by thesneakerscroll@gmail.com

Serena Williams is headed back to competition at the Queen’s Club Championships next week, nearly four years after her last professional tennis match. The 23-time Grand Slam winner will play doubles at the grass-court event, giving Nike a major sports moment just as tennis shifts toward Wimbledon season.

Nike and Serena confirmed the news with an Instagram teaser, putting real weight behind the comeback talk that had been floating around for months. Williams will team with Victoria Mboko, the 19-year-old Canadian who has become one of the more interesting young names on tour.

Serena never called it a retirement after her last match. She framed the next stage as “evolving away” from tennis, which always left the door cracked open even when she pushed back on rumors about a return.

The Nike connection is a big part of the story. Serena signed with the brand in 2003, when she was 21, and has since become one of the most important athletes in Nike history. The partnership moved beyond footwear and apparel in 2019 with the Serena Williams Design Crew, a program built around mentorship, apprenticeship, and bringing more diversity into sportswear design.

Nike naming a building after Serena at its World Headquarters says plenty about where she stands inside the brand. Her Queen’s Club return now gives Nike another chapter to work with, whether that means special product, apparel, or simply a campaign around one of the greatest athletes the sport has ever seen.
