Another day, another new silhouette out of Boston. Of course we jest; it’d diminish what’s surely a ton of work from New Balance designers in crafting their latest innovations to assign that sort of ho-hum cadence to their latest inventions. However, as we’ve surely said dozens of times at this point, NB’s catalog has gained members at an alarming rate. While much of that has functioned to expand their reach into racing aesthetics with the 204V or into the Wallabee world with the 1890A, nothing has stopped them from doubling down on their existing strengths.
The New Balance 983 is living proof of that. Sharing a ton of visual resemblance to the New Balance 9060, there’s little doubt that the fresh silo serves as another spin on heritage hardware for a new chunky runner. However, the New Balance 983 featured here, coated in shimmering tones of navy and black, may just help distinguish the shoe’s aims from its inescapable sibling. Paired with the Coco Gauff-worn blue-on-grey pair, perhaps this edition shows the 983 is plotting a more futuristic, expressive direction. Contrast that with the 9060, whose truly essential colorways lean on creams, off-white, greys, and the neutrals in between, and the picture of where this sneaker is headed starts to come into clearer view.
