Air Jordan 1s Are Becoming Michael Jordan History Lessons

The Air Jordan 1 has long served as a vessel for telling stories about Michael Jordan’s career, nostalgic for fans who grew up watching him and increasingly important as product education for a consumer base made up more and more of people who never saw him play live. Joining pairs like the “Shattered Backboard” and “Black Toe Reimagined” in that department is the Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Last Dance At The Garden,” an homage to MJ’s final game as a Chicago Bull at Madison Square Garden.

MSG is the mecca of basketball. Point blank, period. New York City’s lack of grass and abundance of pavement has long made basketball the city’s preferred sport, fostering a childhood love that translates into fierce fandom for the Knicks at the professional level. From early on in his career, the Garden was MJ’s favorite visiting arena to play in.

In 1998, as cataloged in “The Last Dance,” the Bulls were headed toward a rebuild that would see Phil Jackson leave as coach, key pieces like Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman allowed to walk in free agency, and MJ, understandably unwilling to play through a teardown at 34 years old, ready to retire. On March 8th of that year, Jordan and the Bulls took the court against the Knicks at MSG for what would be his final time ever as a Chicago Bull. Wanting some sort of throughline back to his earliest games in the building, he put away his Jordan 13s and laced up an old pair of “Chicago” 1s instead. His feet got bloody from blisters and the toll age had taken on the shoes, but he still dropped 42 in a Chicago win.

The Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Last Dance At The Garden” pays homage to that brief yet memorable moment. The sneaker does a quasi-“Chicago” impression with its color blocking, albeit with a major materials upgrade. Red floral stitching wraps the toe, eyelets, and heel panels, while the Wings logo and bottom eyelets appear in metallic gold. The large Swooshes arrive in black with metallic gold leather in the background for good measure. The inner tongue carries the date of the game alongside MJ’s box score, while an exterior tongue accent works in blue and orange as a subtle nod to the Knicks. The insoles land in pink with Knicks-themed blue and orange Nike Air branding, and the package includes a card bearing a direct MJ quote about how much fun it was to come back and play at MSG, shoes included.

The Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Last Dance At The Garden” releases September 26th for $155 via Nike SNKRS and select retailers. Check out official images below if you’re considering copping.
