The sneaker formerly known as the Air Max 2000 has another new name, at least when Supreme is involved.
Supreme has officially unveiled its upcoming Nike collaboration, introducing three colorways of what the New York brand is calling the Air Max 2001 Air Ecstasy. Yes, that’s “Air” twice.
The name adds another interesting wrinkle to the return of one of Nike’s more obscure turn-of-the-century runners. While upcoming inline editions of the revived model are being released as the Air Max Ecstasy Plus, Supreme has opted for the Air Max 2001 Air Ecstasy designation for its collaborative versions.
Name aside, the shoe itself stays recognizable as the former Air Max 2000 silhouette while incorporating Supreme directly into its design. The brand name is woven into the mesh upper, transforming the model’s distinctive horizontal detailing into another opportunity for bold branding seen throughout the skate/street label’s designs with the Swoosh.
Three colorways are included: an all-black edition, a particularly loud red and yellow combination, and a white and blue version. Reflective detailing is also worked throughout the design, adding another technical element to the distinctly Y2K-era runner.
The collaboration continues Supreme’s long-running habit of digging into the less-celebrated corners of Nike’s archives. Rather than choosing an obvious Air Max icon, the brand has helped bring renewed attention to a model that never developed much of a cultural following during its original run.
The Supreme x Nike Air Max 2001 Air Ecstasy releases August 27th at Supreme chapter stores and online, followed by the brand’s Asian locations on Saturday, August 29th.
