The Nike Air Liquid Max Explores Earth Tones In “Sequoia”

Does the modern consumer have an appetite for $200-plus Nike Air Max sneakers? That’s a real question worth asking, particularly as ASICS and New Balance continue thriving in the far more approachable retro-running category while Nike stays searching for its next genuine breakthrough (which it may have found in the Streak 3). The brand’s last three Air Max Day flagships have all been impressive feats of engineering, but none has established the lasting momentum Nike likely envisioned, each following a splashy debut with a comparatively muted remainder of its run. The Air Liquid Max, however, still has time to reverse course.

After launching with textured nanoprint uppers, the model has recently begun incorporating a new variant defined by flowing TPU lines. That treatment is especially subtle here, with Anthracite overlays blending into a Sequoia green foundation. Additional Anthracite accents appear on the Swoosh, lining, and outsole, while a Medium Olive midsole houses black Air bubbles.

As suggested above, the Air Liquid Max’s greatest obstacle remains its price. At a hefty $230 before tax, it costs more than twice as much as many of the retro tech runners currently driving momentum for brands like ASICS and New Balance.
