The Nike Air Tech Challenge 2 “Mag” Goes Back To The Future

It’s 1989, and filmgoers are lining up to catch the sequel to Robert Zemeckis’ landmark Back to the Future Part II. Little do attendees know that on top of some classic popcorn fare, they’ll witness a piece of footwear history, as the Nike Mag starts its iconic journey from hypothetical shoe to an indelible, tangible totem in sneakerheads’ minds. Just a year later, Andre Agassi would add his own tentpole, as his most lasting silhouette, the Nike Air Tech Challenge II, came to light on the boisterous, nascent star.

Some 36 years later, the two turn-of-the-decade icons collide. Official images of the Nike Air Tech Challenge II “Mag” have now come to light, faithfully adapting the light grey foundation, white trim, and icy underfoot sections from the automatic-lacing sneaker. To keep Agassi’s flair at the center, a branding patch on the tongue diverts a bit from the Hatfield legacy, but does well to subtly imbue the design with a modern touch.

It’s worth asking why the sudden focus on the “Mag” colorway, and particularly why it’s being utilized in the realm of tennis.
