At The End Of The Day, Nike Just Wants To Motivate Runners

Working side-by-side with Nike’s innovative performance gear and edgy designs is a top-shelf marketing and advertising offense that has pushed athletes to become better. Lately, the latter has come under scrutiny for what some view as a non-inclusive message.

For the recent 2026 Boston Marathon, Nike Running went live with a bold statement that read “Runners Welcome. Walkers Tolerated.” This message was displayed at their store on Newbury St. located right at the finish line,  immediately sparking outrage for its seemingly non-inclusive stance against marathoners who walk some or all of the 26.2 miles.

The backlash does seem over the top, because the Boston marathon has a competitive qualification process and while there are those who walk the marathon, the majority are runners and are serious about it. We’re in an era where tongue-in-cheek can’t quite fly, especially when it comes from a massive brand such as Nike.

That said, Nike is launching an upcoming running collection anchored in core motivation. On the outside, you’ll see a clean white colorway with distinct royal blue diagonal striping on the midsole over the visible Zoom Air bags. Inside the insoles you’ll find words of encouragement, not coddling. Remember: running is one of many sports where there are winners and losers. Nike is just reminding you to try your best.
