Concept-driven collaborations continue to shape the modern sneaker landscape, and Lapstone & Hammer’s latest project with ASICS leans fully into that approach with the ASICS GEL-Kayano 12.1 “The Spark.”
Built around the idea of ignition, the design uses the GEL-Kayano 12.1 as its foundation, a silhouette that has seen renewed attention following its modern reinterpretation of the original 2006 model. For Lapstone & Hammer, that sense of evolution becomes the perfect canvas to explore how a single idea can grow into something much larger.
Material execution is where the story comes to life. An open diamond knit mesh upper introduces a new texture to the silhouette, layered with metallic silver and cream pebbled leather panels that evoke flint striking steel. The signature ASICS stripes are split between black hairy suede and cream suede, adding contrast and depth, while a cotton duck canvas tongue brings a rugged, workwear-inspired finish. Red accents along the GEL midsole and heel logo nod to flame, while dipped lace tips resemble match heads — each pair even packaged with a custom matchbox to complete the narrative.
An accompanying apparel capsule rounds out the release with USA-made cotton pieces featuring Spark-inspired graphics.
This continues the Philadelphia-based boutique’s ongoing partnership with ASICS; just last year, they dropped a GEL-1130 SMU, while earlier projects include their hand-dyed GEL-Kayano 14s that may have started the spark long before this collaboration.
