Nike Recalls The Missing Wanamaker Trophy With The Air Max 95 Golf

Every sport has its own canonized pieces of lore. Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game, Dock Ellis’ “assisted” no-hitter. In the realm of golf, the nascent days of the sport as a legitimate association sport led to some growing pains in the early days, none more legendary than Walter Hagen losing the grand prize just hours after winning it.

For the uninitiated, Hagen took the honors at the 1925 PGA championship, and as he took in his victory (in all manners), he entrusted the Wanamaker trophy with a cab driver for safe keeping. One issue: it never made it there.

Given that the PGA trophy exists as a perennial, handed off from winner to winner a la the Stanley Cup, it was a genuine cause for concern. Luckily, Hagen won the next three titles, kicking the can down the road on when he’d need to come face-to-face with his blunder. Once finally revealed, the PGA minted a new replica trophy that’s still in use to this day, though eventually the original was found in a Michigan basement.

All that leads to the Nike Air Max 95 Golf “Lost and Found,” making its intentions clear with bold text underfoot, graphic insoles, and alternating tongue tags. The tournament’s regalia appears with woven uppers and floral-inspired molding on the side walls.

Though given the era, Hagen’s style is a bit blunted in modern photography, his love for flamboyant colors now synonymous with the game are well-documented editorially. Nike finishes their homage to the “Lost and Found” trophy by turning the entire midsole bright pink in honor of his famed sartorial choices.

The Nike Air Max 95 Golf “Lost and Found” hasn’t teed up an official release date just yet, but expect something close to May 14th, the official start of this year’s PGA Championship.
