New Balance appears ready to push its most successful modern silhouette into even more experimental territory with the debut of the New Balance 9060R. Ever since the original New Balance 9060 launched, the model has comfortably established itself as one of the brand’s defining footwear hits, merging exaggerated Y2K running aesthetics with modern lifestyle appeal in a way that resonated far beyond core sneaker audiences.
Naturally, New Balance has spent the last several seasons exploring ways to expand the growing 9060 universe. We’ve already seen alternate takes such as the 9060Z and other modified executions, but the new 9060R represents the silhouette’s most dramatic redesign yet.
While the tooling and foundational DNA of the original 9060 remain intact, the upper has been completely transformed into something far more reminiscent of classic New Balance “dad shoe” runners. Rather than the futuristic layered construction typically associated with the 9060, the 9060R leans heavily into retro performance aesthetics similar to beloved models like the New Balance 993 and New Balance 530. It uses a much more modern overlay design while keep the slanted-N smaller, a common feature in later era silhouettes.
We first caught early glimpses of the silhouette earlier this month, but it appears pairs are already quietly beginning to arrive at retailers for $160.
