Meek Mill Calls Out Nike Over LeBron 23 “Dreams and Nightmares”

by thesneakerscroll@gmail.com

Nike’s storytelling around the LeBron 23 has leaned heavily into key chapters from LeBron James’ career, with each colorway tied to a defining moment. The final stop brings the series to Miami, where LeBron finally captured his first NBA championship and quieted years of criticism about not having a ring.

The pair is titled the LeBron 23 “Dreams and Nightmares”, a clear nod to the pressure, doubt, and eventual payoff that surrounded that championship run. The phrase also instantly connects to Meek Mill’s 2012 track of the same name, especially the song’s famous “I used to pray for times like this” line, which has become bigger than music over the years.

Meek Mill did not seem happy about the connection. On May 26th, the Philadelphia rapper called out Nike on X, questioning why the brand used the “Dreams and Nightmares” name without reaching out to him. He also said he initially thought the sneakers were fake before realizing the project was real.

The situation gets more interesting because Meek’s Dream Chaser Records reportedly has trademark applications pending for “Dreams and Nightmares.” However, those filings were submitted on May 18th, years after the original song released, which could make any legal argument more complicated.

The shoe name itself may be difficult to fully protect because the phrase is fairly common. Still, the matching apparel could raise more questions. A “band tee” released with the LeBron 23 appears to use a split-face design similar to Meek’s Dreamchasers 3 mixtape artwork, swapping in LeBron and a lion.

For now, this feels like another example of Nike tapping into culture while walking a very thin line. Whether it becomes a real legal issue or just a public callout, Meek Mill clearly wants answers.
