Nike Basketball’s 2027 retro plans could bring back one of its strangest late-’90s hoops designs. The Nike Zoom Flight 5, Jason Kidd’s first official signature shoe, is expected to return in Spring 2027 for its 30th Anniversary.
Current release details remain early, but the retro is expected to retail for $170. Nike has not announced official colorways, sizing, or availability yet. It is also unknown whether Jason Kidd branding will appear on the 2027 version.
The Zoom Flight 5 was originally released in 1997, during a daring era for Nike Basketball. It certainly didn’t look like your typical safe shoe option on the court. With its bulky iridescent “bug eye” pod, sculpted outsole, and aggressive traction the Flight 5 felt almost like a prototype next to other bold releases from this time.

Nike designed Kidd’s play style into the performance shoe as well. It featured 3/4-length Zoom Air cushioning, a torsional plate at the midfoot and an outsole stuffed with pivot points to allow speedy cuts and crisp direction changes. Those attributes helped ground the shoe’s craziness with tangible court performance.
The Zoom Flight 5 also belongs in the same bold design conversation as the Nike Zoom Flight 95, Air Max Penny, and Air More Uptempo. Nike Basketball was pushing shapes, cushioning stories, and visual identity hard during that period, and this model remains one of the clearest examples.
With Nike already expected to lean into more retro basketball releases in 2027, the Nike Zoom Flight 5 gives the lineup a true deep-cut feel. Official launch details have not been confirmed, but the shoe is currently expected to return in Spring 2027 for $170.
