Though now used as a short-hand for the heavy, bass/kick instrument at the low end of modern electronic and hip-hop music, the “808” was just one of a range of sounds included within the Roland TR-808. Now regarded as one of the most influential innovations in popular music, parent company Roland now celebrates its legacy every year on August 8th. One of its newer traditions is linking up with New Balance Numeric and Tiago Lemos, started in 2024 and continued with the NB Numeric 808 Light.
While it may be a strange collaboration at first glance, the skater shared for last years’ edition: “Hip hop has been the soundtrack for my skating, and at the heart of many classics was the 808. To have a collaboration with the legendary Roland 808 on my shoe is an honor.” Similar to last year’s pair, a blackened base is the starting point for this colorway, with pops of yellow and orange speaking to the throwback 80’s design language and overall palette used on the drum machine. A gradient “N” is the another significant development aesthetically, while the curvilinear outlines towards the heel hold on from 2024. Additionally, this features the newly-introduced “Lite” build of the NB Numeric Tiago Lemos 808, billed as “an updated design to deliver the durability and impact protection you need with enhanced flexibility.”
The New Balance Numeric Tiago Lemos 808 “808 Day” fittingly releases on August 8th, retailing for $115 upon arrival.
