Perhaps it’s time for us to retire the “who is adidas’ most valued collaborator” line of questioning. Especially given the Three Stripes’ varied rolodex, without access to the individual deals for the likes of Willy Chavarria, Edison Chen, or Pharrell Williams, any judgment whatsoever would be largely subjective. We do ultimately feel confident in describing Brain Dead’s relationship with the German giant as one of the most creatively exciting, something on full display as the two teamed up anew for the adidas Brain Dead bowling capsule in heady animal prints.
Page through their shared catalog beyond that dressy drop and you’ll see just how scatterbrained and diverse their output has become; climbing shoes and a link-up with Disney (yes, Disney) predate that aformentioned roll down the lanes. They’ve also got something of a foothold in tennis as well, a true through-line across multiple seasons via their Barricade 13 and Stan Smith Unstructured capsules. Leaning into the earnest performance catalog, Brain Dead and adidas now turn to 2008’s Barricade V, last visited for a bring-back in 2013.
That Y2K energy inherent in the silhouette’s construction only gets pumped up for Brain Dead’s two colorways. Almost echoing colored semi-translucent plastic from the tech of the late-90s and 2000s, synthetic siding and mesh unite in either colorful shade. Chrome hits in the spaces between deliver that throwback pop we’ve become so accustomed to in recent years.
The Brain Dead x adidas Barricade V has already been listed at overseas retailers, but a concrete adidas release date is still unclear. While we await more details, catch studio imagery below.
