Michael Jordan’s Wizards era continues to be a rich source of inspiration for upcoming Jordan releases, delivering both original colorways and fresh takes on models that have historically been underappreciated in the retro canon. We’re now happy to relay a headline many (including yours truly) have been waiting on for years: the Air Jordan 16 “Ginger,” originally released in 2001, is coming back for its first-ever retro.

The “Ginger” 16s marked a rare departure from the team-inspired and neutral colorways that defined much of the early Jordan catalog, though its warm palette did pair naturally with the gold trim found on the Washington Wizards’ old uniforms. More importantly, the colorway holds a notable place in Jordan history as the first sneaker MJ wore after returning from his second retirement.

Ginger-colored nubuck covers the model’s signature shroud and forefoot, contrasted by black accents and white mesh underlays. The boot-inspired palette has long drawn comparisons to Timberlands, giving the colorway a lifestyle appeal that helped make it an instant favorite and has kept demand for its return alive ever since.

The “Ginger” is one of several Air Jordan 16 releases on the horizon, joining an upcoming “Black Pack” edition and Free the Youth’s July 2026 collaboration. Expect a Summer 2027 launch for $245 in men’s sizes. See detailed images of the 2001 version below and stay tuned for updates.
