Long before Nike became Nike, let alone the global behemoth it is today, Phil Knight entered the footwear industry at ground level, traveling to track meets across the Pacific Northwest and selling imported Onitsuka Tiger running shoes from the back of his Plymouth Valiant. That humble origin story now inspires a special Nike Air Force 1 ’01 release, unveiled during Paris Fashion Week last month.
The design pulls directly from Knight’s Valiant, pairing Metallic Silver overlays with Pear green accents on the laces, outsole, and sock liner, the latter arriving in a silky satin finish. Retro serif branding appears on the tongue and heel, while custom lace dubraes etched with “PK” initials leave little doubt about the homage. The sneaker takes on the newly-introduced Air Force 1 ’01 shape, meaning a more padded interior and narrower profile compared to the ’07 version.

Since we’re already getting nerdy about Nike history, there is another, perhaps even more notable vehicle the brand could eventually reference. Jeff Johnson, Blue Ribbon Sports’ first full-time employee, also sold sneakers on the road, operating out of a Volkswagen van. Johnson proved to be an even more prolific salesman than Knight, reportedly moving 3,250 pairs over a 10-month span after joining the company in 1965. Johnson’s Volkswagen is commemorated through an installation at the Steven Prefontaine Hall, a sign of how dearly Nike holds this chapter of its history. In other words, a two-shoe pack would make a whole lot of sense in this case.
The Nike Air Force 1 ’01 “Shoe Dog” is expected to release Spring/Summer 2027 in men’s sizing, though firm launch details have yet to be confirmed. See detailed images below and stay tuned for updates.
