Nike’s now-yearly Yardrunners collections are the foremost footwear platform where the Swoosh gets to outfit alumni, attendees, and otherwise appreciators with gear for their chosen school. The Nike Air Max 95 of the same name in 2025 provided an opportunity for four HBCUs to bring their trademarked coloring and institution iconography to the “Big Bubble” silhouettes. After photos of Clark Atlanta University’s Air Max 97 came to light, we knew that the Yardrunners had chosen Christian Tresser’s iconic design for 2026, now made concrete by official images of the full set.
Tuskegee, Mississippi Valley, Coppin State, Clark Atlanta, and North Carolina A&T are the five historically black institutions honored for this year’s festivities. Each shoe’s palette obviously reflects school coloring, with official school emblems emblazoned on the insoles. There, you’ll catch a novel conceptual touch, as ribbon graphics there represent the uniforms of each university’s marching bands. While each pair should align well with their namesake’s established palettes, the use of gradient siding on Tuskegee’s and Coppin’s helps push beyond the bounds of a standard color-up.
In our initial coverage, we speculated that these HBCU x Nike Air Max 97 “Yardrunners” colorways would land sometime in 2027 to align with the Air Max 97 30th anniversary celebration. With official images touching down, it seems more likely that these release sometime in Holiday 2026 as an “appetizer” to that celebration. We’ll keep this page and our Sneaker Release Dates hub updated with any new info as we receive it.
