Sneaker News can confirm that Kobe Brand is set to release a special “NY vs. NY” edition of the Nike Kobe 5 Protro, bringing one of the postseason’s most memorable footwear moments to the public later this Summer.
The colorway first appeared on the feet of Jalen Brunson during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, a contest that will be remembered as one of the most dramatic victories in Knicks history. Trailing late, New York engineered a stunning comeback behind the leadership of its All-NBA point guard, instantly turning the game into a defining moment of the franchise’s resurgence. As is often the case with Brunson’s footwear, many assumed the Kobe 5 was a player-exclusive creation destined to remain in his personal rotation.
Thankfully, that won’t be the case, because these are part of Nike Basketball’s annual NY vs. NY initiative this Summer. The upcoming release draws inspiration from two of New York City’s most recognizable visual identities, combining the iconic green associated with the Statue of Liberty with vibrant blue and orange accents executed in a rugged pattern across the overlay and heel. That same pattern is visible through the translucent icy outsole.
Release details are expected to be announced soon as part of Nike Basketball’s broader NY vs. NY collection, which typically includes a variety of Nike Basketball signature models and sportswear classics such as the Nike Ja 4, Nike Ja Twelve Time, and more.
