When the Nike Air Rift retro was first announced, conceptually it made perfect sense to meet slim-soled womenswear trendsw ith an archival design. Though truthfully, it took a bit of time and a few colorways for the silhouette to really take hold as an “it shoe,” the later adoption of the silhouette by SKIMS as their sole footwear representative to date shows that Beaverton designers had their head in the right place with that initial decision.
As part of their growing “SNKRS Verified” platform, Nike now confirms a retro of the Nike Air Rift 2, the sequel to that original sprint shoe and one that first touched down in 2002. At the risk of being too simplistic, the immediate change is that the Rift 2 presents as a far bulkier option than its predecessor; adding a bootie interior and a more structured sole unit compared to the zonal approach of the OG.

There’s also a clear similarity between the pocked siding of this shoe and additional speedy options from the aughts like the Air SuperFly, another model Nike rolled out to tap into the women’s market. Finally, though there was (is?) serious evolution with the Air Rift 2, the tabi toe hallmark remains in place, visible both in the front and underfoot.
The Nike Air Rift 2 “Kenya” hasn’t been given an official release date yet, but given its breezy composition and what shoes have been featured in the Verified series so far, expect this model touching down sooner than later. For now, check out studio imagery included below.
