Safe to say, if you’ve tuned into our coverage any time over the past year and change, you’re well aware that Vans is back at the table as one of the most important brands in the current lay of the land. To a large degree, that’s been on a design level alone, as their inline products have often elicited more attention than any A-list endorsement (this side of Satoshi Nakamoto, at the very least).
All the same, the California company has continued to pick up “walk of fame” types throughout the past several months, with mainstays like Hayley Williams and Travis Barker now joining more recent endorsees like SZA. While we await the wide debut of VanSZA, another music industry heavyweight is joining her on the roster.
Lil Uzi Vert took to a burner social account to “leak” a first look at two Vans models bearing the rapper’s touch. First up, in contrasting pink-on-black and pink-on-white colorways, is a chunky Y2K silhouette that taps into the super oversized aesthetics both the California company and its competitors (your DC, your Osiris) made a killing off of during the emo/pop punk wave. Though we can’t positively identify which silhouette is employed here, the archival Weston does compare well. A cupsole, spell-out bubble text on the rear, checkerboard alt laces, and a Uzi-specific touch with a LUV tag on the lace unit all stand out on this maximalist model.
United aesthetically, Lil Uzi Vert also takes to the Slip-On, utilizing that pink/black palette once again for a flip on Vans’ classic checkerboard pattern. “by lil uzi vert” text on the insoles and embedded OTW logos help set this one apart from what you might find on store shelves. Finally, if you don’t buy the aughts as a clear reference point for this capsule, era-accurate “moodboard” shots in the gallery should confirm that the Philly MC had that period in mind.
At the time of this writing, neither Lil Uzi Vert nor Vans have confirmed when to expect this inaugural collaboration.
