For several seasons, the pinnacle, and really bulk, of the Made in USA efforts have come at the hands of Teddy Santis. Since taking over the seasonal initiative, his two yearly collections have genuinely been appointment viewing for the New Balance fanbase. Yet the brand has also started to intersperse unaffiliated pairs in between, with the New Balance 990v6 “Community” duo and the New Balance 993 “Mid-Atlantic” serving as recent examples.
Could we be looking at another one of those one-off efforts? We’ll save our judgment on the ultimate goal with this pair until New Balance officially stamps them, but the 990v4 “Pumpernickel” is already impressive without that surrounding context. Serving up a “Banana Split” style arrangement, brown suede dominates the top laters before pink mesh lands a level below. Yellow trim around the N logo and embedded below the heel adds some vibrant color beyond those more neutral overtones.
We’re expecting the New Balance 990v4 “Pumpernickel” out as part of the ongoing Summer/Fall efforts, likely clocking in with the silhouette’s standard $185 sticker price.
