Kids Of Immigrants Honors Generational Sacrifice Through The Nike Total 90 Mule

Kids Of Immigrants and Nike are officially reuniting for their second footwear collaboration, this time turning their attention toward one of the biggest sport-to-lifestyle movements currently happening within footwear. Following the overwhelming success of their Kids Of Immigrants x Nike Air Max Sunder project in late 2024, KOI now steps into football culture with a bold reinterpretation of the Nike Total 90 just months ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Since returning in early 2025, the Total 90 has rapidly become one of Nike’s most ubiquitous lifestyle silhouettes, bridging the gap between football nostalgia and modern streetwear perhaps better than any retro soccer model ever put out by the Swoosh. Yet according to Kids Of Immigrants co-founder Daniel Buezo, this collaboration was already in development before the Air Max Sunder collaboration had even reached the public, positioning KOI remarkably ahead of the curve as Nike’s football-inspired movement continues gaining momentum globally.

Rather than simply applying graphics onto the classic T90, Kids Of Immigrants heavily reconstructed the silhouette through the lens of Nike’s archival Nike ACG line. Rugged trail-inspired colorways, hiking-style outsole lugs, removable tongue flaps, and a transformed mule-style heel push the design well beyond a traditional football retro. The mule construction itself draws inspiration from early-2000s Nike models like the Nike Air Total 90 III Moc (see below).

Beyond Nike heritage references, the mule concept also carries personal cultural significance. Slip-on footwear, commonly referred to within Latino communities as the “chancla,” remains deeply embedded within everyday life, often functioning as both a house shoe and casual outdoor staple. The choice of cork insoles was deliberate, allowing comfort for those who choose to go sock-less. That blend of cultural familiarity and Nike archival experimentation sits at the core of the collaboration’s identity and reflects KOI’s devotion to being a voice for minority groups.

Accompanying the footwear is a five-piece apparel collection featuring a goalkeeper jersey with oversized KOI graphics, a “Better Together” T-shirt, a triple-Swoosh football scarf, and two sock options. Two colorways of the mule will release: a khaki edition exclusive to Kids Of Immigrants and a black version set for a wider launch later via SNKRS and select retailers.

Tying the entire project together are a series of deeply personal inserts designed to honor the sacrifices and perseverance of previous generations. Included alongside the footwear are a mock Global Entry identification card and a custom passport booklet, both serving as symbolic reminders of the opportunities and access made possible through the hardships endured by immigrant families before them.
