ASICS Is Bringing Back The GEL-Lyte III In Remastered Form

Before the ASICS GEL-Kayano 14 was the “it shoe” for the Japanese giant, it was the ASICS GEL-Lyte 3. For sneaker collecting veterans active in the 2010s, there wasn’t a hotter proposition out of the company’s warehouses, brought to wide acclaim by then-David Z. head buyer Ronnie Fieg and continuing through the designer’s work with his own budding imprint. It’d go on to become a defining face of the hobby in the decade to follow, but there’s an even richer history for the runner beyond that era.

ASICS is paying homage to that story with the GEL-Lyte III Remastered, coming at a crucial juncture for both the silhouette and its principals. In a bittersweet yet serendipitous development, the sneaker’s original designer, Shigeyuki Mitsui, is hanging up his cleats this year, announcing his retirement. To cherish that moment, the ASICS GEL-Lyte III takes on a “coral” concept, tied to some Japanese language wordplay where “35” and “coral” are phonetically  similar. That inspires the orange tonality you see here, but also graphic insoles inside. On a more sentimental level, Mitsui’s name runs down the iconic split tongue, a singular touch that’s become a hallmark of the model as a whole.
